Man arrested for defaming Jokowi by sharing porn photos on Facebook

Muhammad Arsyad Assegaf, a satay seller from East Jakarta, was arrested for bullying Indonesian president Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Facebook. The 24-year-old man spread photos of the president and Megawati Sukarnoputri doing pornographic scenes which he edited from blue film screenshots, replacing the face of the performers with those of Solo ex-governor. He was arrested on October 23 after Jokowi’s lawyer Hendri Yosodiningrat reported him on July 27.

Arsyad comes from Ciracas in East Jakarta, works as a seller of Indonesian traditional food satay, and has a poor family background. “I will kneel down in front of Jokowi so he can go home,” says one of his relatives as I quoted from The Jakarta Globe. He faces up to 12 years in prison.

Interestingly, unlike other defamers, Arsyad doesn’t use a fake account--something which, according to his lawyer Irfan Fahmi, makes him innocent because he wasn’t aware he was committing a crime.

Internet power

Social media has grown very significantly in Indonesia. Almost everyone, from celebrities to becak riders, has at least an account on social networking services like Facebook, Path or Twitter. On such services, your posts and photos are seen by public, so you have to be really careful with what you share.

I remember a couple of weeks ago I posted a sarcastic photo about kuffar vehicle conspiracy on Facebook, and most people misunderstood. Many of them condemned me on comments, inbox and timeline, saying I was idiot. Of course I laughed because I intended this post as a joke. I was only surprised by how powerful social media was. In just three days, my photo had been shared by more than 1000 Facebook users. Yusi Avianto Pareanom, an author and journalist living in Depok, called me by phone one afternoon. “Keep going,” he said. “You do the right thing. Don’t worry about what people say.”

The best way to deal with social media

I am not 100% convinced by what Irfan said that Arsyad was unaware of doing a crime, but I can learn something from him: When you are in social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, don’t ever try to use your real account to publish pornographic videos, bullying posts or defaming pictures. Not only it is easier for the authority to find you, but you will also end up having bad reputations. You know, many companies use search engines like Google and Yahoo, social networks like Instagram and Facebook and online forum like Kaskus to track the records of their applicants. I am not teaching you to do bad things online without being noticed, but it is important to use the internet wisely.

Finally, Arsad has to be responsible for what he did. He was mentally healthy when he posted those photos, wasn’t he? My friend A.S Laksana said, “If he had mental problems, he could probably get rid of this charges--because he was crazy. Or you can just regard him as dumb so he will go to hell for his dumbness.”
