Official issues a tsunami warning after a quake of 8.5 magnitude

Quake hit Northen Sumatera or SumatraOn Wednesday afternoon, Indonesia issued a tsunami warning after an earthquake of 8.5 magnitude hit Sumatera's waters.

The warning has been issued for Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatera, Bengkulu and Lampung, an official said, predicting the tsunami would reach Aceh at 4:31 p.m.

Metro TV wrote that the traffic on Wednesday was chaotic in Banda Aceh. While people flee coastal areas for higher ground in the east, electricity and the internet are reportedly down.

According to Twitter users, the quake was felt in Thailand, Singapore, India and Malaysia. For at least a minute High-rise Malaysian apartments and offices on west coast shook.

In September last year another quake also hit northen Sumatera, though it was not as huge as the temblor this afternoon.
